Update from BYC to all skippers

To all USMRC skippers,

With the recent addition of Bruce Stone to the roster, we now have the full compliment of 12 teams for the USMRC.

Here are a few more notes for all skippers - please carefully read.

Sailor ID:  Per the NOR, all competitors (not just skippers) are to provide their ISAF Sailor ID.  Please ensure that your Sailor IDs have been submitted prior to arriving.  You should be able to enter ISAF Sailor IDs into Regatta Network however if you prefer, you may also email them directly to BYC Sailing Administrator Becky Lenhart at sailing@balboayachtclub.com.  For further information about ISAF Sailor IDs, please visit http://www.sailing.org/isafsailor.

ISAF Regulation 19: ISAF Regulation 19, also known as Eligibility Code, is in Appendix 3 of the May 2011 edition of the ISAF Regulations.  The following link will take you to that document.  ISAF Regulations - May 2011.  Please take a moment to review your compliance to Regulation 19.2 (which is specifically called out in the NOR).

Practice Sail: The Gov Cup 21 boats will be available for practice sailing on Wednesday afternoon per the schedule in the NOR.  No practice race is scheduled.

Meals: Thursday and Saturday night dinners for all competitors are included in the entry fee.  All other meals are the responsibility of the competitors.  Area sailors generally prefer to order sandwiches from the deli counter in the Pavillions grocery store near the club (see the Area Dining, Retail, Etc. link on the left).  Orders can be taken over the phone or placed the night before.

Drinking Water:  Both BYC and US SAILING are promoting a greener event by not using disposable water bottles.  We are hoping that you will follow suit and use the "Sport" type water bottles to be provided by US SAILING.  There will be water jugs at the BYC club house as well as on the race course for you to refill your bottles with.

Showers: BYC has an auxiliary building with showers and restrooms that are available 24/7.  Bring your own towels, soap and shampoo.  Though the shower building is open 24/7, club gates are closed each evening at approximately sunset, which means you have to be inside the gates before they close in order to use the shower building.

Housing:  For those of you that requested housing, if we haven't already done so, we will be notifying you of your assigned host before your arrival to Balboa Yacht Club.  We will provide contact information so you can make arrangements before hand regarding your arrival time, etc.

Boat Handling Rules:  The use of Duct Tape anywhere on the boat or marking directly on the hull or deck with any marker or permanent ink is prohibited.  A full set of boat handling rules will be provided in the Sailing Instructions.

GC21 Photos

The Governor's Cup 21 (aka GC21 or Andrews 21) sailboat was designed by Alan Andrews, a member of Balboa Yacht Club, specifically for use in the the Governor's Cup regatta - a long running international level youth match race regatta organized by Balboa Yacht Club.

Below is an Adobe Flash slideshow that provides a glimpse of the boat. If it doesn't show up on your browser or doesn't play or isn't supported on your system (e.g. iPad or iPhone), click on this link to view the photos as an album.

You can also read more about the GC21 on the Alan Andrews Yacht Design website.

Welcome message from BYC to USMRC skippers

To all USMRC skippers,

Balboa Yacht Club is looking forward to your arrival at the 2011 U.S. Match Racing Championships this coming October. To help you in your planning efforts, I have prepared a number of notes for your immediate attention.

Blog
We have created a blog containing information on airports in the region, a variety of businesses that may be of value to you once you arrive (such as grocery stores, pharmacies, banks), weather, links to U.S. SAILING's official event website and event documents, local medical services, a Google Map of these places, and more. The blog is at http://www.2011usmrc.blogspot.com/. We encourage you and your team to review the blog before your arrival. Of course, the official website for this event is http://championships.ussailing.org/Adult/USMRC.htm.

Housing
For those of you that requested housing by the August 31 deadline, we are arranging housing at the homes of Balboa Yacht Club members. We will be in direct contact with you with housing assignments. Our housing goals are to keep teams together (i.e. at one home) and to minimize the distance from the host home and the club.

Transportation
Please visit the blog mentioned above to learn more about getting to BYC. You must arrange your own local transportation (e.g. rental car) as neither the housing hosts nor the club are intending to provide any competitor transportation.

Attire
October weather is frequently very comfortable, averaging between 60 and 77 degrees, however you should come prepared for cooler weather - we recommend a sweater or similar light weight outer garment and slacks/pants. The chance of rain is quite low. We ask that all competitors bring a yachting blazer for use at one of the social events (see below) as well as at the awards presentation. At all other times, casual regatta wear is completely appropriate. Full formal attire (slacks/dress, dress shirt/blouse, tie, blazer, dress shoes) is NOT expected.

First Meeting
The first official meeting of competitors will be on the evening of Wednesday October 12. See the Notice of Race for details. There will be a brief opening ceremony at that time. Though there is no dress code for this meeting, we encourage a "smart casual" dress. This includes your team gear (if you have any), polo shirt and shorts or pants, your yachting blazer with shorts or pants, etc.

Social Events
There are two social events planned for this regatta: a dinner on Thursday night and a dinner Saturday night. Though we are still planning the details of each social event, we can share that one will be a very casual (such as a taco bar or a BBQ) and the other will be slightly formal (sit down/full service meal).  Initially we are planning for the casual meal to be outside and the sit down meal inside however these are subject to change.

Internet Access
Balboa Yacht Club will be providing complimentary WiFi based internet service. Details will be provided at the registrar's desk upon your arrival.
