Excellent westerly wind with very competive racing.  Team Dave Perry made a major move upward winning an extended Semifinals against Team Chris Nesbitt to join Team Taylor Cantfield in the Finals, which Team Perry won in two straight races.  Please visit the official results page at Regatta Network for details.

Summary of Saturday's Racing

Both the Stage 1 Round Robin and the Stage 3 Knock Out Series were completed on Saturday.  9th thru 12th final positions were set from this stage.  The remaining 8 moved on to Stage 3 (Stage 2 having been cancelled).

Stage 3 consisted of a series of races between 1st and 8th place, 2nd and 7th place, and so on.  First team in each pairing to score 2 points wins that round and moves on to Stage 4.  In the end, the four losers are scored 5th thru 8th overall based on their rankings in the Stage 1 Round Robin.

Sunday starts with the Stage 4 - Semi Finals.  Regatta leader Taylor Canfield was given the choice of which team to race against - he chose Brian Angel, who was ranked 3rd overall after Stage 3.  Taylor is probably betting that Brian Angel, though currently higher ranked in this regatta, will be easier to defeat than 4th ranked Dave Perry, who has a very deep match racing resume.  That leaves 2nd ranked Chris Nesbitt racing against 4th ranked Dave Perry.

The Semi Finals are a best of 5 series.  When that is concluded, the top two teams move on to the best of 5 Finals and 3rd and 4th move on to the best of 3 Petit Finals.

Pairing List for Saturday
To determine boat assignments, select a competitor's name at the bottom of the chart and read across to the right hand side where boat number and name are listed.

P/B = Port Side Entry/Blue Flag Boat
S/Y = Starboard Side Entry/Yellow Flag Boat

The scoring matrix shows scores from Friday's racing.  To get current scores, click on the Official Results link on the left hand side of this blog.

Stage 1 (a Round Robin of all 12 teams) will be followed by Stage 3.  Stage 2 has been deleted from the event to get back on schedule.  That means that Stage 1 will determine the final results for 9th thru 12th in the regatta.
Stage 3 is a knock out series that will be sailed to either a best of 3 or best of 5 (aka first to score 2 or first to score 3 points) depending on the day's progress.  The seeding into Stage 3 will be based on the Stage 1 results.  The Stage 3 pairing list won't be known until then but is filled with which ranking boat races which (eg. 1st races 8th means first out of Stage 1 races 8th place from Stage 1)

USMRC Scoring for Friday October 14, 2011

The results below are unofficial transcriptions of the official results posted on Regatta Network.  To see the official results, click here.

A second day of challenging conditions.  Winds started out quite nicely however after just a few flights, fog rolled in and shut down racing. Visibility was reduced to 200 yards, making it impossible for the sailors to see the mark they were sailing, etc.  The fog eventually lifted enough to allow a reasonable length course (about 0.2nm) with visibility from the start line to the windward mark about 50% of the time.  Flight 7 (of the 11 in Stage 1) were completed.

Normally a 12 team round robin is completed in 2 days.  With this stage going into it's third day, the pressure is on the competitors to do well as there is no certainty as to how far thru the originally planned stages this event will get - making these early races more valuable to the final outcomes.

Taylor Canfield and his teammates Tod Reynolds, Stephanie Roble and Jennifer Wilson are leading with a perfect score of 7.

The pressure is on the race committee to deliver the wind.  To help, the racing schedule for the rest of the regatta has been advanced by 30 minutes - First Attention will be made at 11:00am instead instead of 11:30.  Historically, winds in the Newport Beach area don't get going until late morning so everyone is crossing their fingers that the weather will return to something more normal than the extreme heat and lack of wind to the reasonable wind but no visibility of today.

USMRC Scoring for Thursday October 13, 2011

Due to very light winds, only two of the 11 flights scheduled for the Stage 1 Round Robin were completed.
